Race, Racism and Identity Training
We devote much our first quarter to examining ourselves and the powerful socio-economic forces that shape our opportunities, choices and relationships. During this full day training, we'll deepen that inquiry, raising questions about where race and class overlap or obscure the other; we'll try to illuminate the way colorblindness makes understanding race that much more opaque and perpetuates racism. The day includes video, conversation and a multiracial panel of speakers.

- Malcolm Cawthorne moved to Brookline in 1973 and graduated from the Devotion School in 1984, and BHS in 1988, the 1st of five Cawthornes to graduate from BHS. Mr. Cawthorne began teaching at BHS in 1998 where he inherited the African American Studies class from Jimmy Cradle and Gretchen Underwood in 2007. Currently he serves on the boards of BHS Race Reels, The Brookline Historical Society and Hidden Brookline. He is now on the Town Selectmen's Diversity Committee (1yr.)
- Tatiana Cruz
- Heang Ly currently works for Teen Empowerment where she works with youth to address different social justice issues in the communities of Boston. She was also the Youth Leadership Program Director for ASPIRE, Asian Sister’s participating in Reaching Excellence for three years. Heang has over 15 years of experience working with youth, schools, and community organizing. She believes in finding creative ways to talk about and solve social issues, using the arts, interactive dialogue, and the power of youth voice.
