Setting up and managing your internship
1. Prior to contacting your supervisor:
Please read the brief statement called “Meaningful Internship” on the Internship page. Please also consider volunteering more than one time per week--it will deepen your experience much more.
2. Contacting your supervisor: Please cc Ms. Leslie / Mr. Grande on your note
Contact information for your Supervisor is on the Internship Description. Confirm you are available during the time the Internship coordinator indicated is available.
Email your supervisor(s). If you don’t get a response within 3 days, call and leave a message. This is urgent.

Your note should include, in a gracious and humble tone:
- Introduce yourself; mention you are in the Brookline High School Program in Social Justice Leadership with Roger Grande and Kate Leslie.
- Explain that you understand that Mr. Grande or Ms. Leslie set up an internship with your organization over the summer and you would love to be an intern and appreciate the opportunity. Let them know when you would like to begin (this should be as close as possible to the Internship Deadlines) and your available day(s) and hours of the week. Please add when you would anticipate ending--all in a gracious, appreciative tone!
- If this is for Fall, your start date should be as soon as possible. If for Winter or Spring, indicate that you will follow up a few weeks prior to beginning. Please schedule this in your calendar to write a follow-up note. See Internship Deadlines.
- Indicate that Mr. Grande or Ms. Leslie has requested that all Internship Supervisors read the brief statement called “Meaningful Internship” if they have not already. It is available on the Internship page (send the link).
- Conclude note with your full name and contact information: First, Last Name, cell or other tel #, email address.
- Add something about your enthusiasm for this internship and appreciation for the opportunity to support their work.
3. After contacting your supervisor:
- Schedule Winter or Spring follow-up note in your calendar prior to starting. Include all of your contact information again.
- Schedule start date in your own calendar.
4. At the beginning of the internship:
- Save a copy of the Internship Hours Log to your own Internship Folder (Google drive). Fill in hours and date each week to record your visits. Please share the document with your supervisor.
- Schedule 15 minute interview with your supervisor about 4 weeks into the internship.
