List and description of current internships 2022-23
The Boston Alliance of LGBTQ+ Youth (BAGLY) is a youth-led, adult-supported organization committed to social justice, and creating, sustaining and advocating for programs, policies and services for the LGBTQ+ youth community. Volunteers are needed to help host programming for LGBTQ+ youth. There will also be opportunities to plan events.

Boston Area Rape Crisis Center

Application required - The Boston Area Rape Crisis Center is looking for youth ages 14-19 to be a part of their Youth Leadership Corps. Young people selected for this program will learn about and create projects to educate their community on issues of sexual violence. This internship will run all year and holds meetings once a week. Interested students must submit an application to be selected.

Brookline Food Pantry

The Brookline Food Pantry is open to all Brookline Residents who are low-income and are in need of food. Their mission is to ensure none of our Brookline Neighbors go to bed hungry. This internship can include volunteering at the Pantry in-person, packing food bags, or delivering food to at home-home clients.

Brookline Literacy Partnership
|
Application required - The Brookline Literacy Partnership is a student-led nonprofit group at Brookline High School working to promote literacy in areas without equal access to books. We hope to prevent a lack of literacy from acting as a roadblock to self-improvement. Student volunteers from BHS are needed to tutor children in three locations: the Mather Elementary School in Dorchester, High Street Community Center near Jamaica Pond, as well as at the Lincoln School.

Brookline Thrives

Brookline Thrives is a Brookline Food Pantry program that works in partnership with the Public Schools of Brookline. Providing free take-home weekend meals to school-age children in need, Brookline Thrives reduces the number of Brookline students starting the school week hungry. Volunteers are needed to pack food bags on weekday evenings.

Chinese Progressive Association

The Chinese Progressive Association is a grassroots community organization which works for full equality and empowerment of the Chinese community in the Greater Boston area and beyond. Their activities seek to improve the living and working conditions of Chinese Americans and to involve ordinary community members in making decisions that affect their lives. CPA is particularly looking for volunteers who are part of the AAPI community and who can volunteer for 6 months, or longer

Cradles to Crayons Teen Leadership Corps

Application required - Cradles to Crayons is a nonprofit organization that equips children from birth through age 12 who live in homeless or low-income situations with essential items. They are looking for high school students to apply for their Teen Leadership Corps which is a program providing students with the opportunity to serve as ambassadors for Cradles to Crayons and develop their organizational and leadership skills while working to make a difference in the lives of children

Fair Share Amendment Campaign
|
Volunteers are needed to work on the Fair Share Amendment Campaign between September and Election Day in November. Question 1, the Fair Share Amendment, would create a 4% tax on the portion of a person’s annual income above $1 million and require – in the state constitution – that the funds be spent only on transportation and public education. That means $2 billion a year for better roads, safer bridges, reliable public transportation, and public schools from pre-K through college.

Harvard Square Homeless Shelter
|
The Harvard Square Homeless Shelter (HSHS) first opened its doors to the homeless of Cambridge in 1983 in the basement of University Lutheran Church. Today, the Shelter provides 24 homeless individuals at a time with a safe, clean, and caring place to stay during the winter months. In addition to temporary shelter, HSHS also provides counseling resources and a transitional program for guests who are employed and committed to saving money towards securing housing.

Maura Healey's Campaign for Governor

Volunteers are needed to canvas and phonebank for Maura Healey's campaign for Governor. Healey has been serving as Massachusetts Attorney General since 2014, and she was elected the first openly gay AG in the country. She launched her campaign for Governor to lift up Massachusetts families and invest in housing, public transportation, the clean energy economy, and job training.

Racial Reconciliation & Healing

Application required - Racial Reconciliation and Healing is a project to support youth ages 16-21. The project brings together Youth of Color and White youth to expose, discuss, and address structural racism and inequities, with a particular focus on health. This program requires a year-long commitment, and it is a paid internship. It also requires an interview to be selected. It is a spectacular program that many BHS students have participated in during past years.

Samaritans Helpline
|
Each day, people who struggle with loneliness, depression, or suicidal feelings turn to Samaritans’ 24/7 Helpline for nonjudgmental support. On the other side of a phone call or text message, they find a caring listener ready to provide compassion. You can be that caring listener! Samaritans will train student volunteers to answer their helpline, or operate their new "Hey Sam" peer-to-peer texting service. No prior experience is needed.

SHARP Warriors

Application required - SHARP Warriors (Sexual Harassment/ Assault Response and Prevention) Warriors is a coalition of Brookline High School students, alumni, and educators who will work together to raise awareness, provide education, and change the culture around sexual assault and harassment at BHS. Social Justice students are encouraged to apply to be a part of this team, though acceptance to the program is not guaranteed.

South Street Youth Center
|
SSYC provides a fun and safe space for kids to engage in creative play, make art, and get their homework done with the help of supportive volunteers and staff. It is located at a Jamaica Plain public housing facility and supports academic enrichment and other development of the youth who live there. SSYC is looking for volunteers who can help kids 2x a week for at least 3 months.

St. Mark Community Education Program
|
St. Mark is a community center with a mission to improve the quality of immigrants' lives and their social, economic, and educational opportunities through tutoring. St. Mark offers both Citizenship classes and English as a Second Language classes. Volunteers would work as one-on-one tutors or classroom aides to assist adults in either of these programs. There are both in-person classes, and classes over Zoom that need volunteers.

Y2Y Youth Homeless Shelter

Y2Y is a shelter in Harvard Square for young adults 18-24 experiencing homelessness. It is for youth and run by youth. The goal of Y2Y is to build student-led programming to interrupt the cycle of homelessness for a generation of young adults. Y2Y guests have opportunities to collaborate with service providers, other youth experiencing homelessness, and student volunteers to create sustainable pathways out of homelessness and develop skills for long-term success.
